This biological clock is known as the body's circadian rhythm (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). It regulates the body’s cycle of sleeping, waking, and other vital biological processes. Numerous studies have linked circadian rhythm disruption to increased predisposition to disease. This means that people with abnormal rhythms are more likely to develop certain diseases. For example, sleep deprivation due to irregular shift work or prolonged travel across different time zones could elevate the risk of developing mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To mitigate these disease risks, it is important to understand genetic influences on sleep patterns, circadian rhythm, and sleep quality. One person’s genetic variants make it hard to wake up early in the morning (Lane et al, 2022)
